Lent is a sorrowful season, in which we commemorate the Life, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. We engross in fasting, praying, and reflecting on the sorrowful passion of Christ by praying the Stations of the Cross. Lent encourages us to be sorrowful for our own sins, repent, and do penance.

Sorrow is necessary and a significant requirement in our spiritual life, because sorrow is the result of suffering. It is through our suffering we unite ourselves to Christ, as He suffered for us. However, Jesus Christ teaches us that sorrow, when borne for Christ’s sake, leads us to joy. The sorrowful journey of Lent concludes with us rejoicing at Easter, as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Midway during Lent, on the fourth Sunday, we also celebrate Laetare Sunday, which is also known as Rejoice Sunday. This day reminds us to rejoice in our spiritual journey, so that we are not overburdened with relentless sorrow. It reminds us of Easter and the glorious eternal life God has planned for us. It reminds us that, in Christ, every sorrow is turned into fullness of joy. Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds (James 1:2).
