A Kingdom Within
Every kingdom has a king and a queen. There is a kingdom that is not of this world, it is the kingdom of God. In the Kingdom of God, Jesus Christ is the King, and the Queen is His Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary. Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world” (John 18:36).
Last Sunday, we celebrated the feast of the Solemnity of Jesus Christ, also known as King of the Universe and Christ The King. This Sunday, we begin the season of advent, where we prepare ourselves for the coming of Jesus Christ. The kingdom of God is not a place, but a state of being. For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17).
The kingdom of God is not worldliness but living a life in the Holy Spriit. To enter the kingdom of God, one must be Baptised with water and the Holy Spirit. Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” The water symbolises baptism and repentance, and being born in the Holy Spirit represents true conversion, sanctification, and renewal.
Being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus answered them, “The kingdom of God is not coming in ways that can be observed, nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘There!’ for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you.” (Luke 17:21). In another translation of the bible it says that the kingdom of God is within you. The kingdom of God within us and amongst us, highlights the internal and the communal aspect of the kingdom of God. Spiritually it means that the kingdom of God resides in our heart, transforming us from within. Communally it implies that the kingdom is present wherever God’s people gather and live out His will. Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Mt 4:7)
