Illumination of Conscience
St Paul, in chapter 5 to the Romans, states that when sin increased, grace increased even more. In our generation, we know that sin has increased, however, we can also testify that grace has increased even more. The Illumination of Conscience is a grace that people of this generation will receive from God. This has been revealed through private revelation to some saints, mystics, and holy people. The Illumination of Conscience was also experienced by some sinners who, as a result, converted and became holy men and women. During the Illumination of Conscience, a person sees every sin they have committed, as God sees it. They feel the pain their sins have caused God and the effect of their sins on others. They also will be able to see the state of their soul and their eternal destination, if they were to die at that moment.
This is a great grace from God, that will lead many to conversion. Although, it will be a spiritually painful process, it will lead us to sanctification and help us to love God more. To prepare ourselves for this great miraculous event we can develop a habit of daily examining our conscience, repentance of our sins, and making retribution for them. Grow in humility and all other virtues and live a holy life.
The following is what we know about the Illumination of Conscience from the saints, mystics, and prophets:
- It will be an act of God’s mercy.
- A great sign will appear in the sky, and then the Illumination will happen.
- Everyone in the world, at the same time, will see their soul as God sees it, they will see their life almost like a movie, all their sins and how it affected others.
- We will feel immense pain and guilt during it.
- It will almost be as if the whole world has paused as everyone is having their own Illumination.
- It will probably last for around 15 minutes, but it will feel much longer.
- It won’t kill anyone, but people may die out of panic, like a heart attack.
- It will prove to everyone that God really exists, although some will still refuse to believe in Him, but many will be converted.
- No one can escape it.
- We will see where we are to go (in terms of the afterlife) if we were to die at that moment and if we don’t change our ways.
Although the Illumination will be a private revelation and we don’t have to believe in it, it is important for us to remain in a state of grace and be prepared for whenever the Lord calls us. Also, bear in mind that if/when the Illumination happens, it will be experienced differently (in a good way) for those in a state of grace. There is no need to fear about the Illumination of Conscience. Even the visionaries of Garabandal, who got apparitions from our Lady and a detailed prophecy of the Illumination, say that we shouldn’t be afraid, but rather live good lives and be ready for whenever Jesus decides to call us.
