Lenten Retreat, Day 38: Spiritual Warfare
We begin with the sign of the cross, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
Examine your conscience. (Take a few minutes. In silence, remember and feel sorry for your sins, and think of ways you will amend your life.)
Pray the Act of Contrition.
Most people do not believe in the existence of the devil and others show too much curiosity in the evil one. Either of these approaches are wrong. The devil is real; however, we must not give any thought to him. The best approach is to keep our gaze focused on the Lord, that itself is spiritual warfare.
The devil is not a human being, he is a spiritual being and the armour that we use against the devil is also spiritual. Mediate on Ephesians chapter 6:10-17. St Paul writes on the armour of God.
The Armour of God
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood… Therefore, put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
The armour that we must spiritually wear on ourselves is truth, righteousness, readiness to proclaim the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, and the word of God. If we have Jesus Christ reigning in our lives, we have the armour of God on us. After wearing the spiritual armour, we must always pray in the Spirit.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end, Amen.
