Lenten Retreat, Day 24: Choose Heaven
We begin with the sign of the cross, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
Examine your conscience. (Take a few minutes. In silence, remember and feel sorry for your sins, and think of ways you will amend your life.)
Pray the Act of Contrition.
This life is temporal and momentary, and eternal life is everlasting. Many times, we forget that in this life, we are only passing through and transitioning to eternity. We get caught up with the things of this world and at times, the grip is so strong, that we forget about eternity. We tend to make ourselves comfortable in this temporary life and live as if this is all there is to it.
Our eternal destination is either heaven or hell. It is important that we know how heaven and hell will be, so that we can make an informed decision on where we want to be for eternity. If people knew the dreadfulness of hell, they would turn from their wicked ways and live in righteousness. Scriptures and the writings of the saints give us insight on heaven and hell. Study the teachings of the Catholic Church on heaven and hell so that you can make an informed decision on where you want to spend your eternity.
“Consider too, that while both are open to receive you according to your choice, yet God, Who is prepared to give the one by reason of His Justice, the other by reason of His Mercy, all the while desires unspeakably that you should select Paradise; and your good Angel is urging you with all his might to do so, offering you countless graces on God’s part, countless helps to attain to it” (St Francis de Sales, Introduction to the Devout Life, Chapter XVII)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end, Amen.
