Lenten Retreat, Day 18: Know God Through Silence
We begin with the sign of the cross, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
Examine your conscience. (Take a few minutes. In silence, remember and feel sorry for your sins, and think of ways you will amend your life.)
Pray the Act of Contrition.
Silence is fundamental for our spiritual growth. In silence, we encounter God. Silence is God’s first language (St John of the Cross). God seldom uses words when He speaks to us. It is through silence that God speaks, and later, we translate it into words.
Silence is a sanctuary in which we enter the Holy of Holies. It is through silence we come in the presence of God. Sound has its purpose, as we use words, songs, and music to praise God. However, when we worship God, we worship Him in silence. For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him (Psalms 62:5).
Learn to pray in silence, remain in the presence of God. Begin with a few minutes of silence, and as you mature in silent prayer, spend more time silently in prayer. God’s graces will begin to increase in your life, and you will rejoice in the peaceful presence of God.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end, Amen.
