Lenten Retreat, Day 17: Surrender Everything to Jesus
We begin with the sign of the cross, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
Examine your conscience. (Take a few minutes. In silence, remember and feel sorry for your sins, and think of ways you will amend your life.)
Pray the Act of Contrition.
It is not easy to climb a mountain with a heavy burden on your shoulders, nor is it easy to live your life with a heavy burden. Surrendering every burden to Jesus, brings liberty. When Jesus takes over, the heavy burden feels as light as a feather.
By surrendering our troubles to Jesus, we make Him in charge of our troubles. God is delighted to solve our troubles for us, because He cares for us, and in return, He fills our heart with His joy and peace. When we surrender, we give our troubles to God, and as a reward for trusting in Him, he solves our problems.
Sometimes, we tend to solve our problems by ourselves and become frustrated, because we want to resolve things ourselves. We don’t have to prove our capabilities or our worth to God. St Teresa of Calcutta said that God has not called her to be successful, but to be faithful. St Teresa did not know how to feed hundreds of hungry orphans, but she knew how to surrender everything to Jesus, who provided meals for the orphans every day.
We can, like St Teresa, have faith in Jesus and surrender all our troubles to Him, who is the Sovereign God, Creator of all. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Mt 11:28-29)
Surrender Prayer
Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty,
My memory, my understanding
And my entire will,
All I have and possess.
You have given all to me.
To you, Lord, I return it.
Everything is yours; do with it what you will.
Give me only your love and your grace.
That is enough for me.
Amen.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end, Amen.
