Lenten Retreat, Day 10: The Holy Eucharist
We begin with the sign of the cross, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
Examine your conscience. (Take a few minutes. In silence, remember and feel sorry for your sins, and think of ways you will amend your life.)
Pray the Act of Contrition.
Our Lord Jesus Christ walked on this earth, and people saw Him, touched Him, and fellowshipped with Him. They even saw Him die on the cross, and many saw His Resurrected Body and His ascension into heaven. However, He remains with us even today. Jesus Christ really, truly, and substantially present in the Holy Eucharist.
At the Last Supper, while they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins (Mt 26: 26-28). It is through our faith we believe in the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. When we partake in Holy Communion, we receive the Body and Blood of Jesus, and this brings us eternal life. So, Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you” (John 6:53).
Jesus is the bread that came down from heaven (John 6:58). The Eucharist is the source and summit of our faith. The Mass is an eternal liturgy. When we participate at Mass devotedly, we join heaven in the eternal liturgy, and it fills our heart and soul with the presence of Jesus and we unite with heaven, while still on earth.
The Holy Eucharist prepares us for heaven, it strengthens us for our journey on earth. In this retreat, develop love for Jesus in the Holy Eucharist and devotedly see His presence amongst us. The Holy Eucharist is the most powerful presence of Jesus on earth. Touch Jesus in Holy Communion every day and be filled with His presence within you.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end, Amen.
