Christmas: When God Became Man
Christmas fills our hearts with immense joy, because on this glorious day, God became Man. This mystery is what we profess in the Nicene Creed, “For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man.” Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Word of God, became flesh for our salvation. He came to save us from our sins and bring us to eternal life.
During the liturgy in the octave of Christmas, we celebrate not just the birth of Jesus Christ but also his life, death, and resurrection. Jesus’s resurrection gives us hope of our resurrection. We too are born and will die, and we too will be resurrected from the dead, if we believe and receive God’s salvation. When we are born, we leave the womb, and when we die, we leave the tomb.
When we celebrate Christmas, we celebrate the greatest gift of all, our Saviour, Lord Jesus Christ. The name Christmas originally comes from the Mass of Christ Jesus. Mass is a Eucharistic celebration, in which the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, through the power of the Holy Spirit. In Holy Communion, we receive the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. By receiving Holy Communion, we unite ourselves with the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has promised us eternal life in Him.
Jesus said to them, “53 Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day, 55 for my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me and I in them (John 6: 53-55, NRSV).
When our life here on earth will come to an end, we who have partaken in the Eucharistic banquet will be united with Jesus Christ for eternity. How did you celebrate your Christmas? Did you receive Jesus Christ in the Eucharist? Did you partake in Holy Communion? Was your heart overfilled with joy, celebrating His birth? Are you reconciled with God and man and are you at peace?
Jesus Christ knocks on the door of your heart, for He cares for you. He offers you His Mercy and Salvation if you just humble yourself and receive Him today? All the things of this world will perish, only Jesus Christ is eternal, and we who partake in Him, will dwell with Him for eternity. “3 His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us His very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires” (2 Peter 1: 3-4).
