Meditate on God’s Word
Usually when we buy a product, it comes with a user guide or user manual. It provides us instructions on how to use the product, the capabilities of the device, detailed documentation on the product. It is advisable to read this manual before we use the product, to ensure its optimum functionality and benefits. A good manufacturer will always certainly provide a user guide or manual for its products. If a man-made perishable and depreciating product come with a user guide and manual, how much more would God provide us with a user guide and manual for a God-made creation, that which is eternal: Mankind, made in His own image and likeness.
We are not manufactured but we are created by Almighty God. Since, He created us, we are His masterpiece and He alone knows our purpose, our capabilities, our worth. To guide us in our eternal destiny, God provides each one of us a user guide and manual. This user guide and manual is called the Bible, the word of God. It is amazing that the word of God, speaks to each one of us uniquely. A verse from the Bible provides consolation in many different ways; for some it may bring hope, others comfort, for some healing and restoration, for others blessings, for some conviction and yet for others sanctification, for some answers to their prayers. The word of God provides personalized message and instructions, yet it is the same word.
If we use a device inappropriately, without following the instructions in the user guide, it is certain that the device will malfunction. Similarly, when we do not follow the Bible, the word of God, we too will be led astray. To be successful in our life on earth, we need to observe all that is written in scripture. This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth; you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to act in accordance with all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall be successful (Joshua 1:8, NRSV).
A human person is eternal. Therefore, the manual provided by God, for us to refer to and live according to it, is also eternal. God’s word is eternal because God Himself is eternal. All things of this world pass away but the word of God endures forever. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away (Mt 24:35). The things of this world, wither and fade away. The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand forever (Isaiah 40:8).
The word of God is not just eternal, but it is alive and active. Have you ever, in your life, come across a book, or read a book which was alive and active? The word of God fills me to awe, which I cannot possibly explain in human language. The word of God is life, source of all life, it is life giving, it is living. Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart (Hebrew 4:12). The Word of God is incarnate. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth (John 1:14). The Word of God and God are one. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God (John 1:1).
One may say, who wrote the Bible, were they not all humans? God used humans to write His words. Although, it is written by men, it is inspired by God. All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work (2 Tim 3:16-17).
The word of God is power. It creates things. So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it (Isaiah 55:11). God’s word produces what God says. God’s word is power for revival. For I am not ashamed of the gospel; it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who has faith, to the Jew first and also to the Greek (Romans 1:16). The word of God is power to regenerate. For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God (1 Peter 1:23). God’s word is power that brings healing. He sent out his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave (Psalm 107:20).
The word of God is our spiritual food, it nourishes our body, soul, and spirit. It strengthens us, brings us hope. It enriches us with wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. It guides us on the path of life and leads us to eternity. It delivers us from all evil and comforts us in our sorrow. God’s word blesses us and sanctifies us.
The Bible is an amazing book. It helps us to know God and to know ourselves. Spend sometime everyday meditating on God’s word and then obey all that is instructed, and you will embark on a journey that will lead you to eternal life in heaven.
