The Precious Blood of Jesus Christ
Life is in the blood. Every time you donate blood to someone, you save a person’s life. A successful blood transfusion requires a donor and a recipient that has compatible blood types and agree to the blood transfusion. Likewise, Jesus Christ shed His blood on the cross for us, so that we can have life. For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life (Lev 7:11 ESV). We too must willingly accept the blood of Jesus Christ to receive our salvation.
A person cannot receive a blood type that is not compatible. For instance, Group A blood cannot accept Group B blood because the Group A blood will create antibodies against the Group B antigens. The blood must be compatible with the recipient. Through our natural birth, we are all descendants and born of Adam, and so our spiritual blood type is Adam’s blood, which is unholy, contaminated by evil and sin. Jesus Christ is the Son of God the Father and His blood type is God’s blood, which is holy, pure and without sin. Through our natural birth, we are inclined to evil and sin. Sin eventually destroys our spirit, our soul and our body. To recover from this spiritual death, we need a blood transfusion that changes our blood type from Adam’s blood to God’s blood, from sin to holiness. When we believe and accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour, we receive God’s Holy Spirit, who re-creates us and makes us holy, pure and fills us with grace that helps us overcome sin. Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ, has been born of God (1 Jh 5:1b, NewRSV).
Since we receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour, we do not continue in sin, but instead forsake it. Those who have been born of God do not sin, because God’s seed abides in them; they cannot sin, because they have been born of God (1 Jh 3:9). Since we are born of God, we are spiritual beings who live in a natural body. Just as natural food and drink nourish our natural body, we need to eat spiritual food and drink to nourish our spiritual body. The body and blood of Jesus Christ gives nourishment to our spiritual body. When we eat the body and drink the blood of Jesus Christ in Holy Communion, we have life within us and when we die, we will be raised from the dead to live for eternity. For those who do not partake in the Lord’s supper do not have life within them and they will not be raised from the dead.
53 So Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; 55 for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. 56 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. 57 Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever.” (Jh 6:53-58)
The blood atonement of Jesus Christ not only re-creates us, but it also cleanses us. A person needs a blood transfusion in case of an illness. Likewise, when we sin, we become spiritually contaminated. We receive this cleansing, our sanctification through the blood of Jesus. If we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin (1 Jh 1:7).
The blood of Jesus Christ, not only re-creates and sanctifies us, but it also protects us. When you are in a blood relationship with someone, you are in a blood covenant with that person. If we remain in this covenant relationship, we are under God’s protection. The only way to remain in a covenant relationship with God is to be obedient to the will of God. We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them (1 Jh 5:18).
The blood of Jesus Christ, not only re-creates, sanctifies and protects you, but it also blesses you and anoints you. Through your blood relationship you receive an inheritance from your natural parents. Likewise, since you are now sons and daughters of God, you receive an inheritance of eternal life. Everything that God has is yours. Try to comprehend this thought, its unfathomable because God owns the entire universe and much more. You not only receive an inheritance of eternal life, but God anoints you with His Holy Spirit to continue His mission here on earth.
11 In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12 in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory. (Eph 1:11-14)
