Finding a good mentor is like finding a gold mine. You might be good at something, but a mentor can guide you into becoming the best you can be. You might be a diamond in the rough, but a good mentor can train you in such a way that you become exceptionally valuable. Many people never achieve their full potential, nor reach their destiny because they lack the expert guidance of a mentor.

In our Christian walk we need godly counsel from time to time, for without direction, even a ship wouldn’t know where to go. It is sad that many people are misled because of lack and ungodly counsel. I know a time in my life, when I needed godly counsel, I prayed and asked God to send me a mentor, someone that would guide me. One day as I was praying for a mentor, I heard the Lord say to me, you don’t need to search for a mentor, because you already have a mentor. He is The Holy Spirit, He will counsel you in everything that you need to know. The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you (John 14:26 NIV).

mentoringGod has given us His Holy Spirit, so that we might learn to obey His word and fulfil His will. On our own we are not able to accomplish much, but when we receive the Holy Spirit, we are able to accomplish things that we would have not on our own. The Holy Spirit trains us in the ways of the Lord, counsels us into the spiritual truth of God. Now, we have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who comes from God, so that we can understand the things that were freely given to us by God. We don’t speak about these things with words taught us by human wisdom, but with words taught by the Spirit, as we explain spiritual things to spiritual people (1 Corinthians 2: 12-13 ISV).

If you don’t have the Holy Spirit, ask God and He will generously give you His Spirit. If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him (Luke 11:13 NIV). Many times you don’t have something because you don’t ask for what you need. It’s like a person that has billions in his bank account, yet lives like a destitute because he never makes any withdrawals.

If you have a spirit-filled person as your mentor, well it is good for you. God anoints people so that they can mentor others and lead them to God. However this kind of mentorship has its limitations. Moses was a great leader, he lead the Israelites out of Egypt, but the people relied on Moses and failed to have a personal relationship with God. When Moses went up to the mountain to seek God, the Israelites made idols for themselves instead of seeking God.

A good mentor will teach his mentee how to catch a fish, instead of feeding them, because when the mentor is not around, they know how to fish and won’t starve since they have no one to feed them. Jesus fed fish to the multitudes, but he trained his disciples to be fishers of men. A good mentor always leads people towards God.

Mentoring is very essential for the growth of the church, however one needs to grow beyond depending on others for counsel and seek the Lord personally. Human mentors are for newborn babies because they need to be fed, whereas grownups needs solid food. Unless you have the Holy Spirit as your mentor, there is no maturity, because one cannot mature without God. In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil (Hebrews 5: 12-14 NIV).

Our God is omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent, which means God is all powerful, all knowing and present everywhere at the same time. Hence the Holy Spirit is the best mentor you can ever have. You are good, and what you do is good; teach me your decrees (Psalms 119:68 NIV). If you need godly counsel you can attain it anytime, because God is always present, He knows all things and He alone is the most powerful. Unlike having a human mentor who may not be available all the time, who has only limited expertise and influence.

The Holy Spirit will always lead you into all the truth and seek to glorify God alone. We live in a world where we are overloaded with information. Did you ever have problem making decisions, ever wondered which source is reliable, not to mention false prophets and deceptive cults that knock on your door? If you don’t know the truth, you will believe the lies the devil tells you.

The Holy Spirit will always speak the truth and also lets you know about things that are yet to come. We need to seek counsel with the Holy Spirit more than anything else. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you (John 16: 13- 14 ESV).

Have you ever wondered what it is like to have access to the mysteries of God, to retrieve spiritual data containing the secrets of God, who willingly discloses it to you? If this does not blow off your mind, nothing else will. It was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets (1 Corinthians 2:10 NLT).

Can you imagine, a custom-made mentoring from God just for you? The Holy Spirit will direct you on the right path, tell you which way you need to go and even let you know what to speak and when you should remain silent. And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left (Isaiah 30: 21 ESV). For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say (Luke 12:12 NIV). The Holy Spirit will even reveal to you the future concerning the things you need to know according to God’s will, just like He let the prophets and apostles know about certain things pertaining to their life and death. It had been revealed to him (Simeon) by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah (Luke 2: 26 NIV).

You may wonder why everyone does not have this kind of mentoring. God’s Holy Spirit and His gifts are free for everyone, however not everyone desires it. Most people do not discern what is right for them. One person may see a stone and ignore it, while another may recognize it’s a diamond and treasure it. Faith lies in the heart of the believer. The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit ( 1 Corinthians 2:14 NIV).

For mentoring to be effective, you must learn to be obedient to the Holy Spirit. There will be times when you might not fully understand certain things that God will counsel you on, however it is essential that you trust the Holy Spirit and not rely on your understanding. You must be careful not to grieve the Holy Spirit. Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you (Ephesians 4: 29 -32 NIV).

If you ever wonder why you are not hearing from God, examine yourself and repent if you have grieved the Holy Spirit, forgive all people and live at peace with everyone, conduct yourself in a manner that is pleasing to God. Mentoring by the Holy Spirit is all about you doing God’s will and not God doing your will. The counsel of the Holy Spirit leads you to glorify God and fulfil God’s will and purpose for your life.

You might have heard that the best things in life are free and it is the truth. God freely gives us His Holy Spirit to comfort and counsel us. There is no life coach, personal trainer, therapist, counsellor, advisor that can set your life in order, only God can. Every morning I listen to God’s counsel, I write down everything the Lord speaks to me. It’s necessary for me to hear from God, my life depends on His words. All I have to say to you is, taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him (Psalms 31: 8 NIV).
