Purpose is the essence of life, it directs us in the course of our journey through life. A life without any purpose is like being lost at sea or lost in the desert. We are created by God for His purpose. When your purpose in life is not the same as the purpose of God, even though you may have a purpose, you are still lost, because a wrong purpose directs you in the wrong direction. You may be going somewhere, but it is not where you are supposed to be.

Our salvation through Jesus Christ leads us to our true purpose in life. Without Jesus Christ a person is lost and therefore has no true purpose in life. He saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our own accomplishments, but according to his own purpose and the grace that was given to us in the Messiah Jesus before time began (2 Timothy 1:9 ISV).

purposeAs we surrender our lives to Jesus, He leads us according to His purpose. We may not fully understand God’s purpose, but through our Faith in Him, we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28 NIV). Everything in life we go through may not seem good to us, especially the trials and sufferings, but we know that as we trust God, everything the good and the bad, work together to fulfil God’s purpose in our lives.

God loves everyone, however it’s only those who love God that are able to fulfil the purpose of God in their lives. Selfishness serves its own purpose, whereas love serves the purpose of God. Selfishness looks after its own agenda and profit, whereas love seeks after the will of God and desires to serve God alone. It was God’s great love for us, that he gave His only Son to die for our sins so that we could have eternal life. The only reason for God to trade places with sinners was His love for us.

Unless we love God more than our lives, we will not be able to fulfil God’s purpose in our life. Fulfilling God’s purpose requires us to constantly deny ourselves and things that matter to us, and seek after the heart and the will of God. Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it (Matthew 16: 24-25 NIV).”

Many times believers hesitate to fulfil God’s purpose as they feel incapable and lack the ability to fulfil them. God is not looking at our abilities, but at our willingness to serve him, because when we are willing, He makes us able to do all things. At times, believers feel they are not worthy of fulfilling God’s purpose. God is not looking at our worthiness either, He is only seeking for our willingness to serve His purpose, because when we are willing, it is He who makes us worthy. In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will (Ephesians 1:11 ESV).

What is it that is stopping you from fulfilling God’s purpose for your life? Is it ignorance, selfishness, pride or unlovingness towards God? At the end of your journey, what is it that you want your life to be? Is it a life without purpose; a life opposing God; a life that is perishable or do you want to live a life pleasing God, fulfilling His purpose and loving and serving Him for eternity? So I run with purpose in every step (1 Corinthians 9: 26a).
