Parents normally pass on their inheritance to their children in the form of possessions, property and wealth. The inheritance we receive from our Heavenly Father are His own children, which He gives us the right to raise them up as our own. Children are an inheritance from the LORD. They are a reward from him (Psalms 127:3). The inheritance you receive from your ancestors, you use it while you are alive, and then leave it behind when you go to be with the Lord. The inheritance you receive from God are your children and they are eternal, when it’s their time to be with the Lord, they come and join you in heaven.

Autumn FacesChildren bring joy and a purpose to your life. Children are your eternal reward when you raise them up in the Lord. It is sad that many parents in several ways, when it comes to their inheritance, are penny wise but pound foolish. Please let me explain; most parents train up their children to be successful in their careers and businesses, give them the best education, equip them with great skills and set them up for life, but fail to teach them the ways of the Lord. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul? For what will a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Mark 8: 35-37).

If you train your children to be successful in this life but fail to train them in the ways of the Lord, what good would it be if your children are lost forever? If you are saved, your children do have the extraordinary grace upon them to be saved, because of your faith in God, but that does not mean that your children will automatically be saved. God has many children, but no grandchildren. Every person has to acknowledge and believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour to be saved. Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it (Proverbs 22:6).

If you give your children the best in the world but don’t bring them up in faith, let me tell you with a sorrowful heart, that you have done nothing for them but just led them astray.  “If anyone causes one of these little ones–those who believe in me–to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.” (Matthew 18:6). Parents have a great reward for bringing up their children in the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, and failure to do so, will result in greater punishment as well. However, we have a God that abounds in great mercy and it’s never to later to begin, even if your children are grown up now and you have done badly as parents. God can make things right for you and your children if you act in faith now.

In the quote by Dr Haim Ginott, he says, “Children are like wet cement, whatever falls on them makes an impression.” Children can be moulded and shaped for great destiny, and as parents we can make that great impression on them.

Big birds and animals many times kill on hatchlings or baby animals because they are easy prey and are vulnerable. So does the devil, because he knows if he gets your children early, then he has an easy target. Most animals have this natural instinct of protecting their young ones from predators. They hide them, they watch over them, they attack and fight with anything that’s intimidating and a treat to their young ones. We, humans, on the other hand are becoming increasingly heartless, where we have the audacity to leave our children vulnerable to the enemy while we go about fulfilling our own ambitions. Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8).

If you are a single parent and you have to go to work to feed them, by leaving your children behind, you are doing the right thing. As parents it is our responsibility to provide for our children. If you are parents whose single income does not meet the basic needs of the family and you both have to be away from your children to provide for them, you are also doing the right thing, but please make sure your children are safe and looked after by trusted caretakers while you are away and you do spend time with them whenever possible and teach them and instruct them in the ways of the Lord.

If parents leave their children not because of a need but because of a greed, because they want to climb up the corporate ladder, make more wealth or fulfil their ambitions at the cost of being away from their children, then they are placing worldly matters more important than Godly matters. Jesus said to His disciples, “whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me” (Matthew 18:5).

How well are you taking care of your God given inheritance? Are you a faithful servant? Or, are you irresponsible, selfish and careless? Jesus was on His way to Calvary to be crucified. A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him.Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children (Luke 23:27-28). Our hearts should be repentant if we have set wrong priorities in our lives, especially in regard to our children. We may not be an expert in parenting, but God is. In our journey of faith when we falter, if our focus is on our Lord Jesus Christ, He will bring us back into the path of righteousness for His glory.
